NUBIAN ROSE – MENTAL REVOLUTION – LIVEWIRE/CARGO RECORDS – RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 24th 2014

NUBIAN ROSE – MENTAL REVOLUTION – LIVEWIRE/CARGO RECORDS –Out Now.

Nubian Rose was founded in 2011. Guitarist Christer Ǻkerlund and vocalist Sofia Lilja are the main songwriters. Her charismatic stage presence and her powerful voice made their debut album “Mountain” very special and they got raving reviews. With a few line-up changes the band is back with the follow up “Mental Revolution”.

Nubian Rose is:

Sofia Lilja – Vocals
Christer Ǻkerlund – Lead Guitars
Henric Uhrbom – Bass
Tomas Weijnesjö – Drums
Torbjörn Weijnesjö – Rhythm Guitar

Guest:

Joakim Ahlund  – Keyboards
Mats Levén – Backing Vocals
Katarina Kammarköv – Choir

MENTAL REVOLUTION
NubianRoseCoverThe album starts peacefully with a kind of Christmas choir. But soon thunder and lightning take over with soaring riffs and the power vocals from Sofia. It’s clear Sofia and Christer have chosen for a more heavy approach on this second album. The long track “Time Again” has more depth and is more in the vein of the debut album. The strong presence of the drums gives this track some extra punch and the keys from Joakim deliver a melodic touch. Christer’s riffs on this album are always spot on and can be catchy as hell. Listen to the super catchy “Higher” (early Eddy Van Halen riffage) or the openings riff from “The Eye” (high Jake E. Lee factor) and you’ll catch my drift. The track “Tough Guys Don’t Dance” proves that yours truly is a softy! But I beg to differ and bring the dance scene with John Travolta and Ulma Thurman from ‘Pulp Fiction’ to mind! The ballad “You Will Never Walk Alone” is simply superb and Sofia is phenomenal here! The album closer “All Of Your Love” is an up-tempo track with a high sing-along factor!

I must also point out the wonderful artwork from Mattia Savage Will. Above that is Sofia; very easy on the eyes and her remarkable face paint makes her end up very high on my ‘wanna photograph’ list.

Conclusion:
This second album is definitely heavier than the debut. All songs are instant likers, contain excellent guitars and powerful vocals. But strangely I prefer their ‘softer’, more melodic tracks. More songs in the vein of the mighty “Higher” could have accomplished that. But nevertheless this album will make many melodic rock lovers happy and for lovers of crunchy guitars this is an excellent addition to their collection.

Track list:

  1. War
  2. Time Again
  3. Illuminated Within

  9. (Taking This) Further

Score:   3,75 out of 5
