Review: Audrey Horne – Youngblood – Out now on Napalm Records

Audrey Horne – Youngblood – Out now on Napalm Records

Formed 2002 in Bergen, Norway, Audrey Horne are an energy bomb just waiting to explode in your face. Named after a character from “Twin Peaks” their ranks include and have previously included members from Enslaved, Sahg and Gorgoroth.

Audrey Horne is:

Toschie – Vox
Ice Dale – Guitar
Thomas Tofthagen – Guitar
Kjetil Greve – Drums
Espen Lien – Bass

Being completely new to this band and not having done any real background research on them, I really did not know what to expect when I sat down to review “Youngblood” but holy divine christ I certainly wasn’t expecting such muscular riffage!! From the opening song ” Redemption Blues” I was hurled through time and space! The title track “Youngblood” and “There Goes a Lady” are personal favourites of mine.
Song after brilliant song this album is a splendiferous offering to the alter of metal. No fillers to be found, just excellent musicianship, catchy riffs, spectacular vocals, infectious melodies. This is an album that is saturated with melancholy and atmosphere specially in the closing track “The King is Dead”.

You will hear elements of bands from the 70’s onwards such as, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath that influenced these chaps and the metal scene as whole, but dont make the mistake that it’s just another album rehashing old music.. Oh No, that would be a huge mistake to make. Audrey Horne have carved their own niche with “Youngblood” and the influential elements I speak of are just a mere nod of the head to the old metal gods.

Once you play this album be prepared to stop what ever it is you are doing, you won’t be able to turn it off. “Youngblood” is a truly stunning work, I predict this album to be held in high esteem and as a true classic in 20 or 30 years time when people look back at the early part of this century to see what helped forge metal for the 21st century fans. Audrey Horne and “Youngblood” will definitely be high on the list. I cannot urge you all strongly enough to purchase this album, it is a masterpiece created by the Norwegian metal elite and you can’t go wrong with that.
