Review: Children of Bodom – I worship Chaos – Nuclear Blast Records – Release: Out Now.
“I worship Chaos”, and chaos is what you get with disc number 9 from Alexi and co. Children of Bodom is back with a new disc filled with melodic death. Their previous album “Halo of Blood” went into the good direction. On it COB showed a less modern metal approach. With Roop Latvala recently out of the picture it made me curious if this would kill the sound of COB too much. To be honest, Alexi did a great job on laying down all the guitar parts for “I Worship Chaos”. The songs have the recognizable COB stamp on them. Melodic death impressively balanced between aggression and beauty.
Not all the songs have the speed pedal stamped down. For example: ‘Prayer for the Afflicted’. This song takes a firm step back in pace. Despite the cheesiness this song has it turns out to be one of the highlights on this record.
“I Worship Chaos“ is recorded in the Danger Studio again and Mikko Karmillo has really outdone himself in mixing all the parts. Everything is nicely layered and especially the use of keyboards is perfectly mixed on this record.
This record has a fresh playful character and shows us the soul of COB is still on fire. COB fans can buy this beauty instantly. COB shows us they are still relevant in the business. Somehow their “own” sound distinguishes them from the rest.
Score: 4 out of 5
