Sorcerer – In the Shadow of the Inverted Cross – Metal Blade Records – Release: March 20th 2015.

download (12)Talk about a comeback! More than twenty years since their second demo Sorcerer is finally releasing an actual debut album! Granted, the band had disbanded in the early ‘90s and only came back together in 2010, but if you compare this debut album to their demos it’s as if nothing has changed. Epic doom metal, the likes of which never goes out of style. Slow plodding heavy metal with a grand sound. Hell, even Anders’ vocals pretty much have the same theatrical sound as on the demos, which is quite a feat. The only songs which are quite fast, and therefore stand out just a tad more, are “Exorcise the Demon” and “The Gates of Hell” which showcase some very nice up tempo heavy metal.
It’s a shame that it has taken such a long time for the band to bring out a new product, yet even in this time where there is a growing oversaturation of old school heavy metal bands Sorcerer will still be able to carve out a position for themselves as one of the true originals who have lived through those old times.

Score: 4 out of 5
