SUFFOCATON – PINNACLE OF BEDLAM – NUCLEAR BLAST – RELEASE ON: 15-2 – 2013
Suffocation is one of those bands who never let down. With Effigy of the Forgotten. as debut way back in the early 90’s they made a blueprint for many bands who followed. Fast complex riffs, downtuned guitarwork and brutalic vocals brutal death metal was born. Now for “Pinnacle of Bedlam”, Dave Culross is behind the drumkit again and the fans are in treat for studio –album number 7
Frank Mullen – Vocals
Terrance Hobbs – Guitars
Guy Marchais – Guitars
Derek Boyer – Bass
Dave Culross – Drums
Pinnacle of Bedlam
Brutal technical death without loosing touch for being melodic. That’s for me perhaps the best way to describe Suffocation. On this new record it has not changed. The production of course got a bit of an update and everything is crystal clear without loosing the touch of rawness an album like this needs to have.
The brutal riffs are fucking complex again. It take some time for the average listener to swallow the complex song structure. But when all is taken in a couple of times, the listener will be surprised by the depth and mixture these songs have. Suffocation really took their time on getting the song structure right. The room they make for the slower parts are a nice welcome.
Mullen’s vocals has lost nothing of his strength and proofs for me again to be one of the best in this genre! He put his stamp on this album with his deep grunt.
The rhythm section is giving my neck some real banging pain. The slower saw parts on the title-track are a good example of the diversity of the band. One sec you can thrash your fucking living room, the next you can throw a fresh breeze of (h)air! Suffocation is showing that death metal ain’t dead yet.
After spinning this record a couple of times I must say, I have not found a point of critique. This is something what happens not very often to me. My bet is that this record will end up high in many year-list! Great start of a new year!
My compliments also for Raymond Swanland who made the amazing artwork for Pinnacle of Bedlam! The Artwork really screams old school and fits the record great.
