Valkyrie – Shadows – Relapse Records – Release: Out Now
When I put on this album I felt like Kyle Reese wanting to shout “What day is it? The Date! What year?!”. What starts off unashamedly as a Black Sabbath worship quickly mingles with old school Iron Maiden.
It’s as if someone made a time machine and went back to the early and late ‘70s to kidnap Tony Iommi and Steve Harris and made them write songs together. While you can probably hear some other old influences it’s these two gentlemen that stand out the very most. And I’m loving it!
Slow and proto-doom like at times and faster speed, more reminiscent of Maiden at other times. I’m also very much in love with the ragged guitar solos. For the past two decades or so it’s almost as if bands with bucks polish their guitar sounds way too much. I miss the engine revving of old heavy metal and Valkyrie delivers on that like a boss!
Sure, it might be a bit of a game of ‘name that riff’, but I don’t give a damn. Bands like these are the ones that delivers what fans have wanted from the big names for ages, so more power to them. This album is sure to be getting its fair share of spins in my house!
